How to Properly Clean Your Face Mask

Properly cleaning your face mask is almost as important as wearing one in the first place. Without properly cleaning your face mask, you run the risk of making yourself more susceptible to germs. But how do you clean your face mask?

Apart from coronavirus concerns, washing your face mask can also prevent make-up stains from building up on your mask. In case you needed another reason to clean your mask—apart from stopping the spread of a deadly virus—washing your face mask regularly can also prevent your face from breaking out.

So HOW do you properly clean your mask? According to the experts they say:

How to handwash your delicate face mask

  • A container or bowl
  • Iron (optional)

Directions:

  1. Rinse the face mask(s) under hot, running water.
  2. Add a few drops of laundry detergent, scrubbing it in for 20 seconds.
  3. Next, fill a container or bowl with hot water. Let the mask soak in the container of hot water for 5 minutes.
  4. Thoroughly rinse all of the soap and detergent out of the mask.
  5. Lay or hang masks outside to dry in the sun.
  6. Lastly, iron both sides of your cotton mask with a hot iron. This step is optional.

If you don't have laundry soap handy and need to clean your mask?

How to handwash your face mask without laundry detergent

For some, the cleaning of a face mask using laundry detergent can irritate the skin and cause an acne breakout. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to handwash your delicate face mask using a gentler soap instead.

You will need:

  • Hot water
  • Castile soap
  • A container or bowl
  • Iron (optional)

Directions:

  1. Rinse the face mask(s) under hot, running water.
  2. Add a few drops of castile soap, scrubbing it in for 20 seconds.
  3. Next, fill a container or bowl with hot water. Let the mask soak in the container of hot water for 10 minutes.
  4. Thoroughly rinse all of the castile soap out of the mask, until the water runs clear.
  5. Lay or hang masks outside to dry in the sun.
