The first thing lottery winners bought after finding out they were rich

Pretty much everyone has been asked this question: What would you do if you won the lottery? It's a hypothetical question of course but if it really happens it can open up a world of possibilities. Maybe you'd quit your job so you can have one that you really enjoy or maybe you'd buy a new car with all the bells and whistles! However as you've probably heard, most people who win the lottery actually end up blowing it all. At first you think how in the world did they let that happen but then you realize it would be completely life changing having all that money at your fingertips and you'd really have to make an effort to keep it under control. According to an article at msn.com, here are some of the first things 14 different lottery winners spent their winnings on.

  1. John Kutey built a water park - after winning $28.7 million John and his wife Linda decided to donate a portion of the winnings to build a water park in honor of their parents.
  2. Louis White created a trust and named it after her lucky dessert - right before winning the lottery, 81-year-old Louise White bought rainbow sherbet so she started "The Rainbow Sherbet Trust" that would benefit her family.
  3. Nigel Willetts traveled the world - Nigel accidentally won his million and used it to travel the world starting with treating 13 family members to a vacation in Florida over the holidays.
  4. Lara and Roger Griffiths bought their dream home - I imagine this is a popular use of the winnings. Their dream home had a price tag of 670,000 pounds. They also bought a Porsche and two more properties to rent out, invested in the stock market, and Robert spent 25,000 pounds making a record with his college band.
  5. Evelyn Adams took her winnings to Atlantic City - Evelyn won the lottery in back-to-back years with a total of $5.4 million. Feeling lucky she took her extra cash to the tables and slot machines in Atlantic City. She pushed her luck though because as of 2016 she was penniless and residing in a trailer park after gambling it all away.

These were just some of the ways people spent their winnings. You can check out the others at msn.com.
