Hunter Hayes shares a hopeful message in the lyrics of “Too Late,” the song that debuted on Friday (January 30).
“I really just wanted ‘Too Late’ to feel like hope,” Hayes said in a clip he shared on Instagram ahead of the song’s release. “I wanted something hopeful. I wanted a love song, and said, you know, as you go through life and as things happen, everything happens in the time that it’s supposed to. And everything happens the way that it’s supposed to, and if you trust that process, then it’s kind of never too late. …Everything happens for you, not to you. I think the most beautiful things are things worth the wait.”
“It ain’t ever too late/ I found you in a heartbreak/ A little bit of heaven in a dark place/ Still so good on bad day/ It ain’t ever too late/ To make a little magic from a mistake/ I saw God when I lost my faith/ Maybe you’re the reason my minds changed/ Baby it ain’t ever too late/ Maybe it ain’t ever too late.”
“Too Late” is the latest track to arrive from Evergreen, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s upcoming chapter. Hayes announced long-awaited Evergreen details in December. He also confirmed he’s kicking off his headlining “Evergreen Tour” with special guests BLÜ EYES and Franklin Jonas & The Byzantines on select dates.
“Evergreen started as a series of letters from my future self,” Hayes said in a statement when he announced Evergreen. “In some ways a prayer, and in some ways manifestation. I wanted to make a project from the future. It’s full of hope, optimism, light and love. It’s an escape from reality as well as a new way to appreciate the good things in our everyday life, and how every experience shapes us to better and brighter versions of ourselves as we create a better version of our future.”
“There's a lot of moving pieces right now, but this has been a really fun chapter to build musically,” he shared in a previous interview with iHeartCountry, when another track, “Every Piece,” arrived in September 2025. “I feel like it's come together in such a beautiful way. …It just feels like everything's falling into place, and I want everybody to stay tuned because a lot of fun and exciting things (are) happening.”
Evergreen is due on March 6. Listen to “Too Late” here:
