In a multi-year rebranding effort that is already underway, Milwaukee's airport will change its name from General Mitchell International Airport to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
The airport calls it a "rebranding." Most major airports across the country have the name of the major city it is in or near in the name of the airport. Milwaukee does not and airport higher ups thinks it confuses some out-of-state travelers.
The name “General Mitchell” in airport name was in honor of the war hero, Gen. Billy Mitchell, who helped create the U.S. Air Force. There is even a museum at the airport honoring General Mitchell. That museum is still staying.
Reps from MKE say it will be about a year or so before you see all the signs around the airport and highway change.
